Events across BC:National Day for Truth and Reconciliation 2022

Friday, September 30 is the federal government's National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. It's also Orange Shirt Day, originating in a story shared by Phyllis Webstad of the Stswecem'c Xgat'tem First Nation about having her clothing — including a shiny orange shirt that she loved — taken from her when she arrived at residential school.

This is a day for all of us to honour the memories of the Indigenous children who never made it back to their homes, as well as the survivors, families and communities that still carry the grief and pain that are the legacy of the residential school system. It's also an occasion for us to reflect on our own places in the colonial systems that gave rise to that system and that endure to this day — and to learn how we can do more to dismantle those systems and pursue a path of truth and reconciliation.

We strongly encourage you to attend one or more of the events in the list below, happening in communities across our province as well as online. And in addition, you can donate to the Orange Shirt Society directly by sending an e-transfer to donations@orangeshirtday.org or to the Indian Residential School Survivors Society https://www.irsss.ca/.

We hope to see many of you on September 30!
