Golden Tree Farmworkers' Memorial Ceremony

Golden Tree Farmworkers' Memorial Ceremony

Please join the BCFED, the Bal, Punia and Sidhu families, Archway Community Services, PICS and the City of Abbotsford for our annual memorial to remember Amarjit Kaur Bal, Sukhvinder Kaur Punia, and Sarabjit Kaur Sidhu, the three women farmworkers killed on the morning of March 7, 2007, while being transported to work in an overloaded and poorly maintained passenger van.

These senseless deaths sparked a province-wide review of farm transportation and a coroner’s inquest that gave rise to stronger rules, regulations and enforcement, making farm work safer.

The Golden Tree stands as a monument to these women, the sacrifices of their families and friends, as a powerful reminder of the consequences of unsafe work.

This ceremony also honours all farmworkers in recognition of the important work they do and their ongoing struggle for dignity and safety.

The beautiful Golden Tree was built with the generous support of donations from the families, government, labour organizations, business, community groups and individual donations.

The ceremony is followed by a candlelight procession to the Golden Tree in the Friendship Garden.

Delicious pakoras and samosas will be served with chai.
