BCFED issues hot edict in ILWU strike at Trigon Terminals in Prince Rupert

The BC Federation of Labour today issued a hot edict on specific products at the Trigon terminal in Prince Rupert (see note below). The declaration comes in support of ILWU Local 523 longshore workers there, who’ve been striking for better pay and benefits for more than a month.

Trigon was recently cited by the Canada Industrial Relations Board for using contractors as replacement workers. That followed the board’s dismissal of claims by Trigon that the strike was illegal and that the union wasn’t bargaining in good faith.

“Trigon has been using every trick in the book to avoid bargaining and reaching a fair deal, including the outrageous use of scab labour,” said BCFED President Sussanne Skidmore. “That’s why we’re taking the extraordinary step of declaring a hot edict: to make it clear their only road to ending this strike runs through the bargaining table.”

“Trigon seems content to starve out the very workers that make this company successful. They have resorted to using scab labour so that they can keep operating and generating profit while their workers are without a paycheque,” said ILWU Canada President Tom Doran.

“Trigon’s only motivations are profit and control; therefore, we have to escalate our strike action to a level that motivates Trigon leadership to get to the bargaining table and to get serious about settling this dispute.”

Note: A “hot” edict calls on affiliated unions and their members not to handle particular goods from an employer until a labour dispute is resolved. In this case, the edict covers coke, petcoke and LNG products which are at the Trigon terminal, have crossed or are about to cross an ILWU local 523 picket line, or are under the control of Trigon.
