BCFED declares boycott of Nico Wynd Golf Course after worker on picket line struck by vehicle

Meeting late this afternoon, the BC Federation of Labour’s executive officers voted unanimously to declare a boycott of Nico Wynd Golf Course in Surrey, BC, supporting SEIU Local 2 workers now into the second month of their strike.

“It was bad enough with management stonewalling these workers in negotiations,” said BCFED President Sussanne Skidmore. “But Sunday’s horrifying incident makes things especially urgent.”

On Sunday, SEIU Local 2 business agent Dallis Van Steinburg was among those walking the picket line at the golf course when she was struck by a vehicle.

“Declaring a boycott is a serious step to take, but this is a serious situation, and management clearly needs to feel the pressure to reach a fair deal without any further delay,” said Skidmore.

“There’s a straight line between the employer’s refusal to table a serious offer and what happened on the weekend,” said Van Steinburg, who now walks with a cane while she recovers. “We aren’t asking the moon — just for these workers to be treated with decency. That means respecting seniority rights, putting an end to unpaid wages and taking measures to address violence, harassment and retaliation.”

Skidmore called on unions and workers to refuse to do any business with Nico Wynd Golf Course until the boycott is lifted.
