BC unions welcome Canada-BC investment agreement

The new Canada-British Columbia Cooperative Prosperity Agreement announced this morning by Prime Minister Mark Carney and BC Premier David Eby is the kind of good news BC workers have been waiting for, the BCFED said today.

“This is exactly what we’ve needed for a long time: a major investment in creating good union jobs, along with skills training and real support for affordable childcare,” said BCFED President Sussanne Skidmore.

“This will mean thousands of good, family-supporting union jobs, especially for those who’ve been hit the hardest by the economic upheavals of the past few years. And it means their communities can offer a bright future for new workers.”

“The agreement’s affirmation of the oil tanker ban on BC’s north coast is crucial, as is its commitment to working with First Nations as partners,” said BCFED Secretary-Treasurer Hermender Singh Kailley.

Carney and Eby pledged to ensure training and construction projects will be done in a way that addresses the underrepresentation of many groups in the trades. “Investments like these are a historic opportunity to build a strong, inclusive workforce with measures like project labour agreements and the involvement of groups like the BC Centre for Women in the Trades,” she said.

“BC’s unions are looking forward to working with Premier Eby and both levels of government on the implementation of this accord. Working people are the engine of our economy, and we’re going to make sure workers remain front and centre.”
