Vancouver - The 56th Convention of the BC Federation of Labour is next week beginning Monday, November 24, to Friday, November 28.
More than 2,000 delegates from across BC will gather at the Vancouver Convention Centre East to shape the direction of the provincial labour organization for the next two years.
“Our Conventions are an important part of determining the path forward for the labour movement, setting our priorities and advancing important campaigns,” said Jim Sinclair, President of the BC Federation of Labour.
Highlights of the Convention include a series of keynote addresses that cover a range of issues.
- Trish Hennessy, Director of the Canadian Centre of Policy Alternatives - Ontario, will talk about fair taxation and the growing income gap in Canada;
- David Freiboth, Secretary Treasurer of the King County Labour Council, will talk about the successful campaign in Seattle to increase the minimum wage to $15/hour; and
- Dr. Danielle Martin, Vice-President at the Women’s College Hospital, will talk about the state of public health care.
Delegates will also hear from NDP Leader Tom Mulcair, BC NDP Leader John Horgan, and President of the Canadian Labour Congress, Hassan Yussuff.
Jim Sinclair provides his last speech as President of the BCFED on Monday, November 24, at noon. The tribute to Jim takes place on Tuesday, November 25, at 4:30 pm.
Elections for the positions of President and Secretary-Treasurer of the BCFED will be held the morning of Thursday, November 27.
Media are welcome to attend the Convention, with the exception of Thursday morning while ballots are being cast.
